The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History Thomas E Woods Jr 9780895260475 Books

I was already familiar with many of he ways that our perception of crucial historical events has been twisted by the biases of universities and the textbook authors they churn out. But I was not prepared for just how twisted that picture has been. This is a remarkable and indispensable work. Even if you disagree with where Woods (a libertarian) is coming from, you should read this and check his sources, which he has documented throughout. These are not wild-eyed conspiracy theories, but examples of the mundane conspiracy of the media smear, the highly unfashionable idea, the widespread willingness to let inconvenient facts slide down the memory hole.

Prepare to be significantly more informed about the history of your own country, and brace yourself for a good bit of disillusionment and outrage. But read it.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History Thomas E Woods Jr 9780895260475 Books Reviews

This book is an introduction to the subject of what has happened to America. There's a lot left unsaid and many subjects left untouched.
Great book. Makes history fun. Everything they should have taught you in history class that would have made you pay attention. Be warned after reading this book you'll find yourself sharing tidbits of information with friends and family - it's just too good not to pass on!
The truth may be unpopular but this author does not care
Not sure what to make of this. The writing style seems like it is full of pent-up anger just waiting to boil over, like he's daring the reader to cross him. That alone makes it hard to read.

Then there are some of the "facts". In discussing the American Civil War, he says, "The American War Between the States was as much about which region, North or South, would dominate, as it was about slavery." Seems to apply to all wars. The cynic in me wonders if he's trying to draw attention away from slavery, as if he's one of those people who wants to pretend that slavery was merely a symptom of the differences between North and South and not as important as other factors in the war (tariffs, industrial vs agricultural, religion, ...). Bopping around the book shows a lot of similar "facts" which make me wonder if the book is worth finishing.
This book opens all wounds and scars perpetuated by those that want to cover up the real USA. Very few books in todays's world do I want to have in hardback. This is one of the few. Believe me, I will be asking this for this as a present from my children, grandchildren or anyone whom desires to get me something. On the other hand, those that wish to read this, I am very happy to share this book to anyone that is tired of "fake news."
There is a lot of good information here, which is why I give it two stars. The problem with this book is that it is propaganda. It's totally one sided. I'll give a few examples.

It paints Lincoln as a racist jerk. It says the Civil War wasn't about slavery, it was about power, northern power over the south. BS. The Civil War was about slavery.

It makes a decent case that the southern states had the right to secede. I agree. But it ignores the vicious and Satanic behavior of southern whites torturing, raping, murdering blacks, ruining their lives, refusing to recognize that they were human beings, treating them like absolute garbage, selling black babies away from their parents, selling parents away from their small children. Southern whites of this period were behaving like devils, and this book whitewashes that and focuses on much less important things.

After the Civil War ended, southern whites made black lives even worse than before by arresting thousand of them for vagrancy and enslaving them underground to spend the rest of their lives separated from their families, unable to ever see the sun again, just working them to death. This is a national scandal that has received little attention. Conspirators in this atrocity included judges, police, and mine owners. They worked blacks to death by the thousand. It was cheaper to do that than to allow the blacks to eat decently.

And yet, the way this book handles that situation is to ignore the atrocities completely and to pretend that the vagrancy laws were more lenient than in the north. That's like saying Germans were nicer to Jews than they were to Swedes.

This book had such potential. There are lots of worthwhile facts in here. But the book's one sided polarity is what changes it from an excellent book to a bad one. Instead of being a truth revealer, the author is just an advocate of his side of the story, and that's not good enough.
Throughout my high school and college years, during the latter of which I took six elective history courses, national government, and two courses of economics as well as an introductory sociology course, I have persistently questioned the validity of academic textbooks. Additionally, I have always been troubled by government make work programs, relief, and subsidies despite persons as Lincoln and Roosevelt (FD) being labeled heroes.

I am far from politically correct, and Woods's book seems to have been written specifically for me to address the lunacy of large, liberal government. More information is given here to explain the idiotic policies than I have encountered on my collective readings and interests.

At 35, I regret that I only last week discovered this book. I plan to keep it available to augment the social studies education of my child as I will continue to read into some of the topics I found most distressing.
