First, if you are wondering how this fits into the University of Branton series like I was (since the characters don’t appear in previous books), here’s the scoop: Megan is the younger sister of Atticus’s ex-wife Nikki from This Love. Atti, Avery, Dane, and Nik all have cameos.

Megan is a Hollywood publicist, working for her uncle’s company, with Asher Knox as her famous client. Asher is a heartthrob English actor with a distaste for the public life. Model/actor Luca is Megan’s former roommate and close friend. The trio undertakes a road trip back to Megan’s hometown of Branson so Ashton can meet with Atticus to discuss pirates in preparation for Asher’s next movie role.

All three characters are struggling with their own personal issues that are explored (some better than others) throughout the trip. Though you’d never know it from the cover (which is a bit misleading), this is meant to be a love story between three people. I give the author major points for originality. The story isn’t cheap, cheesy, or trashy. Their interactions are very intense and the chemistry and sexual attraction rolls off the page. However, that is not to say there aren’t problems with the execution of the triad love story…

***The following contains spoilers (As well as my interpretation of the story. Others may read it differently, but it’s food for thought). ***

The book opens with Asher and Megan as he seeks solitude from the demands of his public persona. “I stare at the tiny fingers around my wrist…Megan hasn’t touched me in three weeks. Three weeks, four days. It was closer to a month before that. She is very careful with these little touches, dishing them out like pieces of gold.” Wow, the reader can feel the magnitude of Asher’s feelings for her, his silent longing for her, alongside her careful approach to their relationship.

Enter Luca. There are subtle hints he’s bi-sexual in his opening scene and other clues that follow. Although those hints and the book description itself indicate a threesome is in the works, the dinner scene at the resort between Megan and Asher sealed the deal for me on their romance, and I hoped they were end game. Literally, their love story had me at “That’s one kiss, darling,” and I wanted more of just the two of them.

So truthfully, Luca to me always felt more like a friend to Megan than a deep love interest. There was just far more attraction between her and Asher. That’s not to say I wasn’t onboard with the triad, but I felt that it would have played out better as a “journey” for Megan to accept commitment and free her constrained spirit, eventually allowing her to be with Asher, than as a triad love story for a multitude of reasons dealing with characterization, not because I’m opposed to alternative relationships.

The couplings require a bit of suspension of disbelief at how fast Asher, a formerly straight guy, is interested in a relationship with Luca as well a how fast they fall in love given that they only meet just before this trip. If they had more of a background together, it would have been easier to believe. It also would have been nice to have more background on Asher in general.

As Luca’s story unfolded (and it was a gripping tragic story), it just seemed like he was trying to recapture the past rather than move forward in the future. I couldn’t help but think that a therapist would probably tell him he was trying to recreate what he had lost as a substitute rather than deal with his feeling for Sun in the wake of their tragedy. This was particularly driven home, I felt, when he became so emotional and angry at Megan’s refusal to acknowledge the triad relationship and his fear that it wouldn’t survive and he would experience loss again. Luca, it appeared, couldn’t carry on a relationship without a threesome while Megan and Asher could easily have existed on their own. Thus, Megan and Asher seemed like a crutch that Luca wanted to use to avoid a couple relationship because of the guilt he felt over his last one-on-one encounter.

This brings me to sun Sun— I felt there was so much more between them, so many issues that were raised and left unresolved. After a certain point her character is basically dropped. Of course the whole book drops off, and the ending (a HFN) felt incomplete. Do they go public? Does that picture get leaked? (I thought it was going to be by Nikki when it was alluded to that she had Megan’s phone.) How does Megan deal with Kevin? Does she start her own company? And down the road, does this really last long term when issues of marriage and/or children would certainly at some point come into play?

All in all, the story really drew me in, and I couldn’t put it down. Yet the ending was unsatisfying, both because if felt unfinished and because I was rooting for Megan to end up with Asher while Luca dealt with his issues with Sun rather than running away from them. Had that happened I think the story would have felt so much more developed and fulfilling.

Lastly, there are enough grammatical errors—many comma splices and incorrect word choices to detract slightly from a smooth read. A professional proofreading/editing would greatly benefit the text.

Sweet Ruin University of Branton Volume 3 Nazarea Andrews 9780989479943 Books Reviews

***I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Nerd Alert Book Love Blog***

Megan Beauchamp left Branton to get out of always living in her sister's shadow and move to L.A for her career. She works for her uncle's agency as a personal assistant to the famous actor, Asher Knox. But she is only given the job as his PA because she is his type. But this fiesty redhead refuses to cross the line to advance her job. Luca James is the first friend she made when she moved to L.A and now he is her best friend.
Asher Knox is a gorgeous, British, famous actor. But he is just lost. He has everything any guy could want good looks, great career, girls throwing themselves at him all the time, and he just landed a huge job. But Asheris so miserable. He doesn't handle the stardom that comes with being a famius actor very well. But Megan helps keep him grounded.
Luca James is a gorgeous black man who is known for his abs that he models. Luca is a very straight forward type of guy. He knows what he wants and he will go after it until he gets it. And he is willing to give up everything he has to get what he really wants.
Little do they know but tgeir lives are about to quickly change. Megan's boss is threatening her job, Asher is really struggling with his fame, and Luca's attraction for his best friend increases and he lands a job working beside Asher. Megan is taking the two guys back home to preparethem for their upcoming rolls. When a car ride, close quarters quality time, and cheap hotels is going to start testing the three, what will happen?
This book was.....wow! I love the tie ins with the first two books in the series. I think this book offers a little bit of everything for all romance readers, with the added steamy sexiness it offers. I realky enjoyed reading this series and curious to see what else Branton has to offer us. So I give this book a Nerd Alert B or 4 stars.
